It's been all over the internet in the last few days, but in case you've been living under your counter or something...
The USDA has proposed new rules and regulations that are likely to result in the disappearance of small and family owned dairy farms. The proposal flies in the face of everything that we, quality conscious coffee people, love and care about. It will result in milk being aggregated into huge lots, with no differentation for quality or source. It will make it more difficult to buy locally and to support independent businesses. And it will most likely result in increased milk prices as well.
And personally, as someone who grew up surrounded by small, family owned dairy farms, I have a clear understanding of the financial challenges of such a business. The idea that the federal government is trying to make the lives of these farmers even harder is appalling to me.
Read about it - and make your voice heard.

Slight political comment: exactly when did the US move from being "for the people, by the people" to "for the corporations, by the corporations lap dogs?" ;)
ReplyDeleteThis is bad stuff. Some of the best milk I've ever tasted in my life has come from some of these small farms in Oregon and Wa State.
Folks have 3 days before the comments period ends....

I know Hein Hettinga from Sarah Farms personally, and I can tell you that he is NOT what he is trying to look like!! He is absolutely the farthest thing from a small family minded dairyman that you can imagine, and the only reason that he doesn't want to pay into the pool is to financially cripple the small family dairyman. He will steal a dime from you if he has the chance. Totally NOT family minded and very selfish. Left his grandchildren high and dry when their parents,(his son and ex-daughteri in law) divorced. All he wants to do is have the monoploy. He wants to be the only one in business, and once he reaches a certain point when all the small dairies are out - then he will have the freedom to raise prices if he wants to, and I will tell you - HE WILL! He has MILLIONS of dollars, yet won't even help with his grandchildrens school tuition, which their mother cannot afford, and their dad won't pay, (Probably because Hein told him not to.) Don't be fooled by this guy. He is not the "poor me" he is being made to look like. Laws are in place for reason.
ReplyDeletePersonally I think it is sad what our government is doing to us, for years now they have been slowly taking the power away from the people which is exactly where it is supposed to be, according to the fathers of the Constitution! But I guess since they are dead physically, our government can just run a muck and do what they wish. Who will stand up for the people since our government keeps us too scared to really fight for our freedom. Our freedom doesn't lie across seas in other countries, that's just where the almighty dollar is (OIL).
