I'm the biggest moron in all the world

We recorded four complete podcasts from Thursday through today (Sunday). In total, we're talking about at least 6 hours of amazing stuff.

All lost.

Don't even get me started on what happened. Let's just say, in the excitement of being able to record a bunch of back-to-back shows, I didn't take the time to listen to what we had recorded after each one.

Here's what I stupidly lost:
- Mark Prince on the PF Podcast
- Predictions on the NWRBC, and the champ (Jen Prince from Zoka) the night before her win
- An interview with actor Peter Weller, a.k.a. "Nick skoolz RoboCop about espresso"
- John Sanders and John Hornall announce the end of Hines Public Market Coffee as we know it (Hornall is moving to Philadelphia)
- Mike Lanz from ESI talks about the new La Marzocco machines
- Various folks answer the question, "What's your advice for someone who wants to open a new shop?"
- Interviews with Heather Perry (2003 USBC Champ), Tracy Allen and Chris Davidson (Zoka), Kyle Larson (2004 NWRBC Champ), Sarah Allen (Barista Magazine), Matt Milletto (Bellissimo), Michelle Campbell (SCAA), Brent Fortune (Crema Cafe & Bakery, Portland), Chrissy Hoag (Dog River Coffee), Julie Beals (Fresh Cup Magazine), Ryan Dennhardt (Baristas' Daily Grind, Kearney, Nebraska), Chris Deferio, Sammy Piccolo (Caffe Artigiano), Andrew Barnett (Ecco Caffe), Courtney Rogers (Chapters Books and Espresso), Mike Ferguson (SCAA)
...and much, much more.

You have no idea about my heartache. Two segments: the RoboCop-guy interview, and the Hines farewell interview, are priceless moments that would have been our "best-of" segments for sure. I'll talk about it on the next podcast (we'll still be able to record one or two before we go back to the east coast), but suffice it to say... I'm truly sorry. I guess the fact that you (the listener/reader) really have no idea what you're missing softens the blow a little... and to those who spent time on-mic for what's now... nothing... I'm incredibly sorry.

I think I'll go die now.

  1. I lost a bunch of recordings on my Powerbook one time. I was using battery power and the processor/app couldn't handle that much audio data with out A/C.

I think we all need to work on our computer hacking skillz.

  2. Oh my fucking gosh. :( :( :(

Some classic stuff there, Nico, classic stuff. All that joshing and jiving back and forth with the podcast rivalries. Jeanette Chan doing the "News" on your podcast. All those interviews. All that audio. All those moments. Peter Sellers. The Johns. The getting booted out of the Zoka booth by the power bandits. The "Hey, we don't swear in canada... well, only a super tiny minority of us do".

Damn bro. I'm heartbroken along with u.

  6. Don't be too hard on yourself, man. This stuff happens. I am trying like mad to finish my (one month late) Coffee Corps report, which I have inadvertently deleted TWO TIMES.

The important part is that the interviews happened. Call me crazy, but even though we have lost the recordings of this information, the vibration of the dialog is out there floating around the cosmos.

  7. nick - if there is anything i can do to help, let me know. if its a hard drive issue we could do some data forensics - if its misencoded there might be some way to recover into transcribable audio. call me if there is any small chance we can still get at this.

you had a beautiful sand mandala there bro.

at the minimum, i think you should carve yourself out some relaxing time and write about some of your experiences talking to these folks.

Sounds like sabotage (or do you say "sabatage"?) from a rival podcast.....eh?

  9. nick, man that is too bad! I know you guys worked really hard to capture all that stuff.

I imagine it is like taking the hopper off your grinder without pushing in the hopper stop, you'll only do it once.

  13. All I said to Nick all weekend was, "Jesus, I can't beleive how hard you work, man!"
Nick is so dedicated and I was so sorry to hear about the loss of the tapes.
Raise a mini-snickers to our Nick on this dark and stormy Halloween...
TO THE HARDEST WORKING MAN AT COFFEEFEST SEATTLE!!

(and he had some stiff competition, but there is no denying it)

  14. Dude I work in radio - and shit like this happens to us too. Don't worry about it. It's only some audio file. Not like it's health or family level importance.
