The new coolness: Grinder?

2006 was supposed to be the Year of the Grinder. So much for that prediction. Versalab didn't become the It product: too slow, too inconvenient for commercial use, too much attitude.

There have been, however, various reports of Things in the Works. John E, for instance, posted a photo of the prototype LM grinder on his Flickr site.

Meanwhile, John has his own grinder project going...as do a few other folks who may, at this point, prefer to remain nameless.

So, people in the biz, what do you know? Will 2007 be the lucky year?


P.S. Nick, I'm trying to, as you might have said, 'unblow' my wad. :-)

  1. Does "S" stand for "Slow" production? The only thing in 2006 with more buzz is the GS3. I don't have one of those either :(

  2. Thanks for the un-blowination fer sure.

    Personally, if a Robur or similar grinder-doser could be modified to minimize heat issues, I'd be happy enough. The "no horizontal grind path" issue isn't a big deal to me, especially knowing the issues that occur with alternative designs (static, etc.).

    So either a Mazzer with two axles (belt driven or whatever), or some sort of active cooling of the hot-bits (fans, peltier cooler, etc., but without creating condensation issues), while still retaining the doser... and I'd be a clam who is happy or as one does. (a little pstam tribute there... sorry)

  3. At least there is some forward movement with grinders! I'm excited by a number of projects that deal with espresso bar production issues. 2007 is as far as I know the year of the grinder, at least thats what my place mat say's ;-)

  4. The highly anticipated 220 Mazzer Roburs which will be available this year are meant to minimize or possibly eliminate heat issues some high end & fast paced shops are having. The burrs spin at the same RPM but the 220 motor has more torque and will produce a lot less heat.

  5. Hey Dave, you wouldn't mean the standard Roburs that we have been using forever downunder? ;P Actually, the three-phase is a bit of a beast ...

    The other grinder that I haven't heard much about except downunder is the BNZ. It has the absolutely incredible feature that when you dose the grounds fall pretty much straight down! It shoots itself in the foot by being stepped, though :(

    Talking about this heat issue, it has been interesting that there are home baristi who keep on bringing up the heating issue. Is it just me, or does your mazzer mini actually not spontaneously erupt into flames when you only use it for three shots a day?

  6. If there is one Grinder becoming the No. 1 grinder here in germany, it is the Casadio istantaneo. A grind-on-demand grinder with conical burrs and a very,very exact working timer.
