The photo at the left is apropos of nothing, except that I liked it. Those hands belong to James Hoffmann, pulling a shot in NYC at Ninth Street Espresso.In a previous post, I talked about achieving World Peace by reducing Mazzer grinder waste. Well, here's some more info on that topic.
If you go to Home-Barista.com, you'll find instructions to make a little shnozzola(tm) for your Mazzer. I think it works pretty well and has the potential to save coffee and alleviate the Mazzer Mess.

i tried out the shnozzola(TM) mod on both our Robur and our SJ, the result was certainly less mess, and some of the coffee from the SJ doser actually landed in the portafilter.
ReplyDeleteBut, but the coffee still lands on the left hand side of the basket (esp. with the SJ)! I feel like maybe a right-leaning chute would help somewhat, or a longer chute of something, am I chasing a dream too unachievable?
Are the dudes who built the clover interested in grinders (with alls their spare time now and all...)
It's not that hard to make a right-leaning cone, but it's hard to maintain the rightward lean once the shnozz is installed in the doser. Can you simply hold the pf further to the left while dosing?

It's interesting that the SJ appears to throw more to the left than the Robur. Unfortunately I don't have a SJ, so I can't try it.
ReplyDeletePerhaps a single music wire mounted on the shnozz (as in my original "Hey Kidz" post) would help kill some of the leftward momentum.

This was helpful. I had been playing around with something like this off and on but finally decided to put something "into production" as they say in software.
ReplyDeleteI took one of our customer loyalty cards (plastic credit card), bent it into a c-shape (with the bend on the long axis), with the open end of the c facing right, and put it into the doser chute. The "springiness" of the plastic card holds itself in place so there's no need to mount it. About half the The closed end of the "C" deflects the coffee thrown leftward and drops it straight down. I had removed the forks from all of our mazzers long ago because they impeded our ability to move the basket around with the spouted PF's. If you keep the center of the PF basket close to the closed end of the "C", it drops very nicely into the center. You can then move it around in a circular pattern to fill it up.
I have tried this on both a Super Jolly and a Mini. Worked great in both instances. The clumping issue is mostly eliminated by quick paddle flicks, although I definitely think the wire suggested here would really work well.
Results? One day I tested it... we pulled around 150 triple basket shots (~21g) and wasted maybe 60g. Not bad at all. Of course a lot of this depends on knowing when to kill the grinder as we don't have a timer on the SJ yet.
