I used to have a stovetop with a steam wand and a nozzle for the espresso. It looked more like a sand pail with a couple of tubes coming out of it though. My mom had it in the garage, and one day I decided to take it out. Very 1950s home decor kind of thing. Useless for its quality, but a cool thing to have when you're 16 just getting into coffee.
This looks cooler, much more impressive looking, I'd still prefer not to own it though. Nothing like stovetop espresso with milk.
Very cool looking, I checked out their web page and they had a video of it in action. Unfortunately the shots looked pretty pathetic, especially for a $400+ machine. But, would I want one solely on the merit of it's shininess? Heck yes.
The developer openly admits that the Atomic was his starting point for the Otto. Last time I checked, they were looking at shipping in January... haven't been back to see since, what with it being completely out of my price range - but it sure is a pretty, shiny machine.
These are based on an Italian design from the early 1950s. They were originally called the "Atomic", designed by Brevetti Robbiati and made in Milan.
ReplyDeleteThere are usually a few on eBay, and they go for $$$.

ReplyDeleteAs Will said, this is a re-make of an old and well known stovetop device called the Atomic.
ReplyDeleteI have seen the originals go for $1,000+ for use as replacement parts, so the price is rather reasonble.
Everyone I have spoken to agrees that the quality of the new productions is on par with the original.
