Good stuff AndyS.
Had a little thought today while looking at some latte art pictures.
I've come to the realization that true "indie rock" latte art is dry and bubbly looking... while "top-40" latte art is all shiny, bubble-less, and smooth.
Same goes for "punk rock" latte art, which is also a bit dry and has foam that looks a little sunken... while "only discovered Franz Ferdinand when they were on SNL" latte art is glossy and perfect.
Know what I mean?

Who you callin' top 40?
ReplyDeleteStep away from the pipe
ReplyDeleteWould etching be considered "easy listening"?

Deferio,
ReplyDeleteHave you seen the current homepage of the Dutch barista?
Is that easy listening or Sesame Street?
Etching is emo.
ReplyDeleteJust to clarify my silly post...
My wife and I have made a habit of watching a TiVo'ed episode of "Law & Order: SVU" every night, and the wannabe detective in me was thinking yesterday: when you see a photograph of latte art... where the foam looks a little dry... the dark-parts look almost 'crusty'... I imagine what most probably happened before the photo... the barista poured a great latte, looked at it, and thought, "Oh crap... gotta find a camera!" By the time you take a picture... you know what I mean?
Whereas when you see really shiny-happy looking latte art, the barista (or a friend) must have had the camera ready. Such pre-meditation and narcissism... that's not indie-rock, baby.
I'm not hatin'... I'm jess sayin. ;-)
(that little winking-smiley wasn't indie rock either)
Trish,
ReplyDeleteExactly. Even farther for those though.
Telli Tubbies.
Nick,
So if I read it right the "indie rock" latte artist simply remembers to be narcissistic a little later than the "top 40".
SoI think we should at least give credit to "top 40" for being prepared.
Goofus pours a great latte but has no camera to prove it to his coffee buddies.
Gallant pours great latte art and has his camera right by his side...along with all his coffee buddies.

Nick your explanation is now fully grok'd.
ReplyDeleteYes. Sometimes its 'The camera was just there the other.day..week..where is the damn camera?', 'That was grea.. *sprintslideofftofind*', I feel lucky when I've actually left the damn thing around and opportunistic. Hopefully it's not terribly narcissitic.
Some of the ones I've never shot that I just didnt want to run for the camera are regretted ;) hehehe!
Then again, the chorus in my head say we're sane.
