(* is an allusion to a movie line from 'Men In Black 2,' and in no way is meant to demean the prior, awesome-jawsome record... just thought I'd put that out there)
$36 difference between #1 and #2. apparently small axe won it. i don't get it. i guess i misinterpreted their goals, but it seems exceptionally showy for what i thought was a group that was about what was in the cup. what am i missing? did i totally misinterpret small axe's goals? is there a media push forthcoming?
You should listen to podcast 39. Geoff Watts and Mr. Kintaro Maruyama both talk about Small Axe, Maruyama Group and CoE in a fashion I have never heard before (and I work 20 feet from one of them.)
That being said...it's not always about buying #1 or #2, it's about getting what you want according to your tastes.
Gotta give mad props to Tom at SM's for this post--anyone else have anything like this to share from Pamama? http://www.sweetmarias.com/PanamaCompetition2006/PanamaCompetition2006.html
Just a couple of comments regarding the Panama Esmeralda purchase, on behalf of the Small Axe group and members who participated in the auction...we bought this coffee because we just plain love it. Every coffee lover owes it to themselves to get a taste--I've been in the business for eleven years and this is absolutely one of the real highlights when it comes to sheer joy, intensity, and generosity in the cup. Many of the classic washed Ethiopian characteristics set in a pristine, fully articulated context with effusive aromatic qualities and total hot-to-cold persistence. There is a reason this coffee has won every competition it has entered (3 consecutive best of panamas, 2 RG cupping Pavillions, 2 Rainforest Alliance competitions). It is spectacular, which is why we purchased it. Would I have preferred to pay $20.00? Sure. Listen Dan, I can tell you this: we certainly were not bidding in $10.00 increments. This thing bid all the way up to 50 bucks in tiny increments, taking almost 10 hours before settling. Obviously someone wanted it as badly as we did. You know why this coffee has gotten so much attention? Because it is a copmletely rippin, ball ticklin, ass whoopin, finger lickin, angelina jolie lip kissin son of a bitch. And now I can drink it every day!

It takes two to tango at an auction.
ReplyDeletePerhaps the members of this incarnation of Small Axe heard from their customers and simply procured the coffee based on demand.
PR? C'mon these guys get great press for far bigger things than what they spent for a few bags of coffee.
Also, the Esmerelda is a fan-f'ing-tastic cup of coffee. Perhaps it remains "about the cup" even at 50.25.
sorry, i'm a little clueless here... but which auction and lot of coffee are you all raving about?
ReplyDeleteThere's your bone. (again)
